When can I start my training?
Do I need to have any prior martial arts training to start Aikido?
No. Instructors will work with you until you are ready to join the rest of the group.
Do I have to be in shape to start Aikido?
You should be able to do moderate exercise. For beginners, we recommend practicing no more than every other day to give your muscles time to rest and recover.
I’m somewhat of a slow learner. Is it ok to make mistakes?
Of course, it is ok to make mistakes. Our teachers are very patient and are aware that learning is specific for each individual. It’s important that you do not compare yourself with others and know that Aikido will help you in many ways.
I’m a bit nervous about starting a martial art; how do beginners like me start training?
An instructor will work one-on-one with you to teach you the dojo etiquette, warm up and stretching exercises, basic movements, and how to take falls for your safety and body conditioning. When you are ready, you will be gradually integrated into the general class. We recommend practicing no more than every other day to give your muscles time to rest and recover.
Do I have to get a gi when I sign up?
It is recommended that you have a gi (white top with pants) when you start training. We have uniforms at the dojo that can be purchased or you can purchase a gi at a martial arts supply store.
What other kinds of equipment do I need to get started?
To begin training, only a gi is needed.
How often should I come to class?
You may come to all the general classes. However, if a beginner, we recommend training no more than every other day to give your muscles time to rest and recover.
How long does it take to become good at Aikido?
It depends on the individual – their commitment in time, training, persistence, and motivation.
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
Depends on several factors: 1) minimum of 3 years of training; 2) attitude; 3) permission by Chief Instructor to test; 4) pass test requirements for shodan (1st degree black belt).
Can I take Iaido as well as Aikido?
You must be 18 years or older and have the permission of the Chief Instructor or Technical Director. There is an added monthly fee for Iaido.
Why are immunization records required for children?
In response to the recent, well-publicized, disease outbreaks in California, we require immunization records upon sign up to ensure the health of all of our students.
What is Birankai?
What do the terms “Hombu” and “Aikikai” mean?
Aikido = “The Way of Harmonious Spirit”
